“I remember him coming into the office and playing it to me for the first time,” says Ed Bicknell. "Romeo And Juliet" was the first signpost to his intentions: a near six-minute roller-coaster ride rumbling through the wreckage of a shattered love affair. He envisioned the band’s sound being enhanced by keyboards, and of this freeing him to explore more complex terrain. Knopfler always was a prolific writer, but as he approached Dire Straits’ third album he had new horizons in mind. Illsley smiles at the coincidence and suggests – entirely accurately – that the 35-year-old song sounds as if it had been made just yesterday.Īt the time of its release it represented a crossing of the Rubicon for Mark Knopfler as a songwriter and for the band in general. The moment he walks through the door, Dire Straits’ 1980 hit "Romeo And Juliet" begins playing on the radio. John Illsley and I meet at a coffee shop in Notting Hill on a bright spring morning. The rest I find a bit of a yawn.Ī year after 'Communique', on Oct. If the two albums had been released in the opposite order, I think I would then have been disappointed in the s/t, for the same reason.Īngel of Mercy is a fairly ordinary tune but a good foot-tapper. My initial reaction was "This is a weak album." Trying to explain this objectively in retrospect, I think it's because although the standard of the songs is as good or nearly as good as the debut, Mark Knopfler basically summed it up when he said it was basically more of the same, just a bunch more songs they had not used for the debut.

When I finally heard Communique in full I admit to being slightly disappointed. I heard Lady Writer and a couple of other songs off that album when i was in Argentina, but by the time I got to Paraguay the radio stations there had only just discovered Sultans of Swing, which I heard everywhere. This was due to the vagaries of travelling some South American countries seemed to be pretty up to speed with newly released music, while others seemed rather slow off the mark.

"Lady Writer" was actually the first DS song I heard, i.e. Oops, I wasn't paying attention and did not realise we were officially now on Communique! We seem to be switching back amd forth. I think Dire Straits use cover art very well, but with much more subtlety than the bands of the seventies. but we'll get to that later.Īlchemy is a very famous piece of abstract art by Brett Whitely.

This album is artistic statement, and what a statement. There isn't as much subtlety on this album lyrically. This album is like a lightening bolt across the sky and the songs contained within are very real and pointed. Here we have realism, I'm not sure if it is a photo or possible airbrushed art, but the picture is striking and real and possibly somewhat prophetic. Love over gold in every way is just another kettle of fish. Again the art is abstract but relevant to the material inside, the red shows the music to be a bit more fiery, and the blue hidden underneath shows that the mellow subtle feel still exists within that. With the album being a little more raucous, this makes a lot of sense.

With Making movies we have a block colour, red, which can be interpreted many ways, but it has a thumb space with the pale blue slid in their. The picture is again a washed out picture with nice use of colours and subtlety, and it is enclosed in an envelope. It has a nice use of colours and subtlety, and there in lies the connection to the album.Ĭommunique has another piece of abstract art I guess with a less subtle reference. a parking lot, an office area, someone suggested perhaps a docks. We have a lady leaning against a pillar in a nondescript space. Whether abstract art or whatever else one wants to refer to it as, I like the cover of this and always have.
